The Eagles are bringing in an old friend in an attempt to help a suddenly desperate situation at running back.

The team announced on Friday that they have signed running back Jay Ajayi, a move they made after placing Darren Sproles on season-ending injured reserve.

The Eagles are dealing with injuries to both running backs currently, as Jordan Howard is also dealing with a shoulder injury. Howard has been limited all week in practice and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game.  With the status of Howard very much up in the air for Sunday, the Eagles could go into a crucial game with just Miles Sanders, Boston Scott and Ajayi at running back.

Ajayi, 26-years old, played a key role in the Eagles' Super Bowl victory in 2017, and appeared in four games for the Eagles last season. He has totaled 592 yards on 115 carries with four touchdowns during his time with the Eagles. He was a free agent this offseason but didn't sign with a team despite getting a handful of workouts. It is very possible the knee issues Ajayi has dealt with throughout his career is the reason why he hasn't been signed.

Although both Sproles and Howard are injured, Ajayi seems to be more of a replacement for Howard, as they are similair players and could fill similar roles on the Eagles' offense. Not having Howard this Sunday would be an obviously big blow to the offense, considering he has arguably been their best skill position player this season.
