Latest update on Carson Wentz's injured back

We have an update on Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz — but we still don’t have any final answers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Wentz is scheduled to have an MRI on Thursday to “help diagnosis an issue that has plagued him for several weeks.” The MRI comes one day after, according to Schefter, Wentz had a scan on his back that was inconclusive.

At the very least, the MRI likely means Wentz won’t practice on Thursday, and increases the chances he won’t play on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

It is interesting, although not surprising, that Schefter reports Wentz has been dealing with the back issue for several weeks. Wentz was on the injury report for three-straight weeks — Weeks 6, 7, & 8 — earlier this season. Twice he was listed as limited in practice with a back injury. So it appears that the issue Wentz has been dealing with likely occurred somewhere in Week 5 or 6. That means the Eagles have apparently allowed Wentz to play with pain in his back, a surprising move for a team that has been overly cautious with their quarterback's recovery from his torn ACL.

The fact that Wentz is having to undergo two tests on his back — a scan and then an MRI — certainly isn’t going to make any worried Eagles’ fans out there feel any better as they await news on their franchise quarterback.

Head coach Doug Pederson is not scheduled to meet with the media until Friday, which means that could be earliest we get any official word from the team on Wentz’s status not just for Sunday, but for the rest of the 2018 season.
