It might not be today, but a recent story strongly suggested that when Bryce Harper does eventually sign a mega-deal this offseason, it will indeed be with Phillies.

In a story titled "Bryce Harper will sign with the Phillies. You can bank on it.", USA Today reporter Bob Nightengale cited multiple league sources that expect Harper to eventually end up playing right field next season at Citizens Bank Park.

Nightengale writes:

"It’s hard to find an executive, scout, or rival agent who doesn’t believe that Harper will eventually sign with the Phillies, maybe a month from now when he can drive from his Las Vegas home to Mandalay Bay and make the official announcement himself."

Although the Phillies having interest in Harper is not surprising, the idea that they might actually land him is. Harper is viewed as the best free agent hitter on the market this offseason and was expected to have teams lining up to sign him for whatever it costs.

It does not, however, appear that has happened.

Nightengale writes:

The Chicago Cubs don’t want to spend the money unless someone takes Jason Heyward or Yu Darvish off their hands. The Los Angeles Dodgers don’t have interest. The St. Louis Cardinals don’t have bright lights. The San Francisco Giants are changing course.

Needless to say, the Phillies landing Harper would be a huge get for the front office. Owner John Middleton has made it very clear that he wants to build a winner in Philadelphia as soon as possible, and is willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen.

It appears if Middleton is serious, Harper is there for the taking -- and unless the team blows it, should end up in a Phillies' uniform.
