Sudfeld signs tender; Eagles Cap Space update

Eagles quarterback Nate Sudfeld has signed his second-round tender, according to a report from Pro Football Talk

The Eagles placed the second-round tender on Sudfeld earlier this offseason, a sign of just how high they are on the former sixth-round pick. Sudfeld has been the Eagles’ third-string quarterback the last two seasons, but has been the top backup to Nick Foles the last two seasons as well after Carson Wentz went down.

The tender is not a cheap one for the Eagles, as it carries a cap hit of just over $3 million. That isn’t as much as they were paying Foles last season, but it is a significant raise for Sudfeld, who had a cap hit of just over $500,000 last season. Sudfeld signing the tender leaves the Eagles with around $19 million in cap space.

Signing the tender would seem to make Sudfeld almost a lock to be the top backup, but it doesn’t 100% hand him the job. The Eagles have a Super Bowl caliber roster currently, and with Wentz’s injury history, they won’t go into next season with a backup quarterback they don’t trust. If Sudfeld struggles during the offseason it wouldn’t be surprising to see the team bring in a veteran quarterback to really compete with Sudfeld and potentially take the job from him.

For now, however, the job is Sudfeld’s to lose.
