The Phillies attempts to sign "stupid money" this season took a blow on Tuesday when Manny Machado reportedly agreed to a 10-year, $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres.

Now, it is officially Bryce Harper or bust -- and it sure seems like the Phillies are trying to close the deal.

According to Todd Zolecki of, the Phillies met recently with Harper's agent, Scott Boras.

Their interest in Harper is real. A source told on Sunday night that the Phillies and Boras have been talking more regularly lately and making progress, but that they were not close to a deal. Another source said Tuesday that the Phillies had a second face-to-face meeting with Boras early last week in Florida.

The meeting with Boras could certainly be viewed as a positive sign for the Phillies' chances of landing Harper. This is the second known face-to-face with Boras the team has had, with the front office and ownership meeting with Harper and Boars in Las Vegas back in January. The fact that multiple reports suggest Harper is close to making a decision, and that the Phillies are in the lead, could also be viewed as promising.

Here is what Jim Bowden of The Athletic said recently on CBS Sports:

"I keep hearing there's a lot of momentum and traction on him signing with the Philadelphia Phillies. He could be rounding third and heading home shortly. I am hearing they are well down the process...I keep hearing their could be momentum there in Philly. I think Harper is ready to go. I don't think he is going to sign a short-term deal. That is what the San Francisco Giants offered him...every indication I get is he is going to get at least 10 years and more $300 million. That has not changed."

Of course, in what has become a very public game of back-and-forth between the Phillies and Boras, the Phillies have made it clear that they are not going to simply hand over a blank check,

Whether the Phillies are able to close the deal remains to be seen, but after months-and-months of speculation and reports, it appears it is now a matter of days -- not weeks -- until Harper makes a decision.
