Why I'm worried about Harper coming to Phillies

Tuesday was not a good day for the Phillies.

Perhaps this will still end with Bryce Harper's arrival, but with the reported signing of Manny Machado by the San Diego Padres, the pressure is now on the front office to land one of the big stars they promised and to spend the stupid money they talked about.

That is going to be harder to do after Machado's decision, as Harper is now the only star left on the open market. The good news is that the front office is still working overtime to land Harper, as according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, the Phillies met recently with Harper's agent, Scott Boras.

Zolecki writes:

Their interest in Harper is real. A source told MLB.com on Sunday night that the Phillies and Boras have been talking more regularly lately and making progress, but that they were not close to a deal. Another source said Tuesday that the Phillies had a second face-to-face meeting with Boras early last week in Florida.

The meeting with Boras could certainly be viewed as a positive sign for the Phillies' chances of landing Harper. This is the second known face-to-face with Boras the team has had, with the front office and ownership meeting with Harper and Boars in Las Vegas back in January. The fact that multiple reports suggest Harper is close to making a decision, and that the Phillies are in the lead, could also be viewed as promising.

The bad news is that the Phillies' game of leverage with Harper is now over. Harper has the power, and the Phillies are the team now in desperation mode.
