Latest on Ajayi, Sproles for Eagles

September 21, 2018 - 2:26 pm

The Eagles' injury report for their Week 3 game is out -- and it is not good.

Both running backs Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles have been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts, leaving the team with just running backs Corey Clement, Wendell Smallwood and Josh Adams for Sunday.

To make matters worse, Clement was listed as questionable with a quad injury, an injury he must have suffered in practice one day this week.

One interesting note on the injury report? Receiver Alshon Jeffery is listed as questionable, which is an improvement from last week when he was listed as out against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although it is unlikely that Jeffery plays, the fact he is questionable means the Eagles feel there is at least an outside shot he suits up against the Colts.

Running back, however, is the real issue for the Eagles.

The Eagles promoted rookie running back Josh Adams to the active roster this week. Adams, undrafted out of Notre Dame, had an impressive training camp and preseason for the Eagles. He should see plenty of playing time on Sunday vs. the Colts. The Eagles struggled to run the ball last Sunday in their loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, totaling 91 yards on 24 carries for an average of 3.8 yards per attempt. Ajayi had his moments, but averaged only 3.3 yards per attempt on his seven carries.

If Clement can't go, the team will be down to just Smallwood and Adams -- which means quarterback Carson Wentz could be getting plenty of work in his first game action since last December.
