Well, the number one guy beating the Bryce Harper to Philadelphia drum all along, Bob Nightengale, is changing course a little bit.

Nightengale, speaking on KNBR 680 in San Francisco, says the Dodgers and Nationals are out of the race, making it a two-team race between the Phils and Giants. However, it sounds like Nightengale thinks the Giants have the edge.

“With the Giants moving in and all the optimism, I do believe it’s a coin flip," Nightengale told KNBR. "I think for the Phillies to get Harper, they’re going to have to grossly outbid the Giants to get him, I really do. I think if it’s close he goes to San Francisco, if there’s a huge gap, it’s tough to walk away from that kind of money.”

In early November, Nightengale said you "can bank on" Harper signing with the Phillies. He hasn't backed off of that stance until now.

Nightengale also reports that the Giants are offering a short-length deal, something like five or six years at $30 million or more per season.

However, Jon Heyman reports that Harper is not interested in short-term deals, good news for the Phillies.

Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C., who correctly reported news about a Harper mystery team (SF Giants) previously, says Harper could decide by Thursday

Nightengale joined 94WIP's Marks & Reese show on Tuesday and said he does not believe Harper makes a decision this week. You can listen to Nightengale's full conversation with Jon Marks and Ike Reese below.
